KNOX COUNTY (WVLT) -- A woman and her baby are expected to recover, after they were shot through the backseat of a parked SUV on Saturday afternoon.

It happened just after 3:00 PM on Crisman Road, when sheriff's deputies say Darrell Jackson Sr., 46 noticed his son's friend, Eric Hansard, 25 trying to steal his shotgun by shoving it down his pants.

Jackson Sr. followed Hansard and his son, Darrell Jackson Jr. outside, and tried to get the gun away from Hansard.

That's when it went off, sending pellets through the passenger side window of the parked SUV, and into the mother's knee.

The baby suffered scrapes from flying glass, and both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Sheriff's deputies later arrested Jackson Sr. and charged him with reckless endangerment.

Hansard was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, and Jackson Jr. was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, because drugs were found in the house, the Department of Child Services placed the baby in state custody.
