East Tennessee Dr. who killed a man during suicide attempt tries to kill himself again

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Sevier County optometrist sentenced to jail time just Monday for killing a man during a botched suicide attempt in 2006, is in critical condition after police say he again tried to take his own life.

Sevier County deputies say Dr. Edward Smith was flown to UT Medical Center after he ingested poison this morning.

If he survives, Dr. Smith is due to report to prison on may 15.

Sevier County deputies say Smith was trying to kill himself when he crashed his car into a tree and a home, killing Chuck Finchum who was sleeping on a couch.
