McMINNVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A former McMinnville day care owner who was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of a 6-year-old in her custody has been sentenced to life plus 32 years in prison.
According to a news release from prosecutors, a Warren County judge sentenced 41-year-old Sherri Mathis on Wednesday in the 2004 death of Cheyenne Delp.
She was convicted of murder in March. She also was found guilty of aggravated child abuse for beating and choking Cheyenne and her brothers, David and Ryan.
Mathis had custody of the children from 2001-2004 because their parents had legal issues.
Susan Niland, a spokeswoman for prosecutors, said Mathis will have to serve at least 83 years in prison.
