Judge grants speedy trial motion for suspect in Christian-Newsom murder

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One of the four suspects accused in the deadly carjacking of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, is getting a new trial date.

George Thomas was set to go to trial in 2009, but judge Richard Baumgartner granted a motion Thursday to move up that date.

That means Thomas will likely be the first of the four suspects to face trial.

Prosecutors had wanted Letalvius Cobbins to be tried first.

A new trial date for Thomas will be set on May 15.
