8-year-old Middle Tennessee boy shot in head, dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A child was fatally shot in Clay County.

Kristin Helm, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said Monday a bullet struck the 8-year-old boy in the head Sunday night at a home in Red Boiling Springs, about 60 miles northeast of Nashville.

Helm said an investigation is under way, but preliminary information indicates the death was an accident.

She said it wasn't immediately known who was holding the weapon.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

The TBI said there were several other children and at least one adult in the house when the shooting occurred.

This is so sad. It's going to take a long time for the one who held the gun and the other children in the house to get over this. My sympathies to the family.
