MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Maryville police have captured a Louisiana man charged with attempting to murder a sheriff's deputy after he struck the deputy with a stolen vehicle while trying to flee.
Officers arrested 34-year-old Herbert Clifford Vititoe at an apartment complex around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said his department was tipped that Vititoe may have been coming to the Maryville area because of acquaintances there. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana had been looking for Vititoe since Sunday.
Officials there said he was recently released from a St. Bernard Parish prison and was being sought for questioning in another possible crime.
When an off-duty sheriff's deputy spotted him and started the questioning, police said Vititoe struggled with the deputy before trying to flee in a sport utility vehicle that had been reported stolen from Louisiana.
Maryville police said Vititoe could face local charges for the vehicle and firearms found in his possession.
