High gas prices have more folks heading to public parks

Knoxville (WVLT) - Thinking of taking some time off work with your kids this summer to do something fun? Well look no further than right in your backyard.

With 81 scenic parks and 40 miles of greenway in Knoxville, there is lots for your family to enjoy close to home.

If you're riding around this summer looking for something to do, think Knoxville first.

"Knoxville's a great place to live we're very blessed to be in a city this nice," Knoxville Parks and Recreation coordinator Kathleen Gibi said.

You can skateboard or bike at the new skate park in town off Concord Avenue in downtown Knoxville. So strap on your helmets and grab your set of wheels.

"Kids can go and learn how to skate they have different levels," Gibi said. "You can be a beginner and practice on little short posts or you can be an expert going in the deep bowls."

There's also three new parks in Knox County featuring the new kids splashpads. The kids can handle their water guns and stay cool in the sprinklers.

"People can sit on the grass families can come here and enjoy the park while kids are in the splash pads," Knox County Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator Ellen Blasius said.

You can also rent a bicycle and ride 16 miles of connected greenway along the river. Or rent a canoe and paddle several different routes depending on your skills, and Ijams nature center offers birds, animals, paved and unpaved trails and a boardwalk.

"Ijams Nature Center saves you a drive to the Smokies and you see just as much and just as many animals," Gibi said.

So whatever your pleasure this summer, there's lots to do in Knoxville for you and your family.
