Chemical scare at Knox County hotel possibly caused by meth

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A chemical smell that caused a scare at the Comfort Inn in Powell off Emory Road, and Rural Metro says evidence points to the possibility of a meth lab.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 1:00 p.m. Friday where they found "a haze and strong agent type odor" in one of the rooms, according to Rural Metro.

Everyone was evacuated, and "precautions were then taken in case of a possible Meth contamination," according to a Rural Metro Fire Department release.

The fire department says, "After crews were able to continue their investigation, it was determined the room had been subjected to a type of vandalism that could be associated with the making of meth."

Occupants have been allowed back inside the hotel, but investigators are still looking into the suspicious room.
