KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – An early morning apartment fire erupted Sunday at a South Knoxville apartment complex.
It happened just after 12:30 AM at the Spanish Trace Apartments on Davenport Road. Reports from the scene indicated at least two fire companies were called to the scene along with the Knoxville Police.
The fire is believed to have originated in a top floor apartment within building D. And fire investigators believe the blaze may have been started by improperly discarded smoking materials.
On man had be rescued by Knoxville Fire Captain Dennis Noe who used a bucket truck to get the the man trapped by fire, and screaming from his thirf floor window.
Images from Volunteer TV’s Vol View, which is mounted on the roof of Baptist Hospital, showed flames shooting several feet up into the air.
Nearby buildings were evacuated by 1:00 AM, though some residents were allowed in about an hour later.
The fire was extinguished around the same time evacuations were complete. Crews remained on the scene past 2:00 AM to watch for hot spots and prevent the fire from rekindling.
