Georgia man drowns swimming near Tennessee dam

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A Georgia man has drowned while swimming near the Chickamauga Dam in Chattanooga.

Chattanooga Police Sgt. Jerri Weary says 18-yr-old Leroy Stacey of Ringgold, Ga., was swimming with friends just before 5 p.m. EDT Sunday when the accident occurred.

Witnesses told police that Stacey swam to a nearby buoy and was swimming back when he went under and didn't resurface.

Rescue crews and divers found Stacey near the area where he disappeared. Weary says Stacey was transported to Memorial North Park Hospital was he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Weary says police are unsure why Stacy went under, but police are investigating.
