2-year-old nearly drowns in Clinton swimming pool

CLINTON, Tenn. (WVLT) - A 2-year-old child was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning after nearly drowning in his grandparent's swimming pool.

Officers responded to the call around 8:45 a.m. at a home on Melton Hill Circle in Clinton.

The boy is Anthony Hampton. He remains in critical condition at East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

Neighbor Jerrica Varner has known the family for nearly 20 years. She says the grandparents are constantly playing with Anthony and always have their eyes on him.

"They're wonderful people, they're well respected, everyone knows them around here, they're super nice," Varner says.

Officers say the incident appears to be an accident, but they are still investigating.
