According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tiffany Bass walking along Newport Hwy. (U.S. Hwy. 411) around 9:30 p.m.
Reports indicate she was left of the fog line when she was struck by the 2001 Chevrolet van driven by Candace Byrd, 23, and thrown into a guardrail.
Byrd was not injured. Authorities did not say if she will face charges in the incident.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says pedestrians need to pay attention to what they're doing and walk facing traffic. If at night they suggest wear reflective clothing so drivers can see you.
"Every situation is a little bit different, We want you to talk out of the roadway if you can, but if you have to walk in the roadway, you definately need to walk in what we would call on coming traffic," Lt. Don Boshears, Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Boschears recommend people who plan on walking to dress appropriately. He suggests keeping a flashlight in your car to help you in case you break down.
