PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) History came to life this weekend in Pigeon Forge for the 4th annual Smoky Mountain Relic Show. The event showcased guns, weapons, clothing, and mostly Civil War era goods.
Some of the items on display, like swords and sheaths, are valued at more than half a million dollars.
The two day event at the Smoky Mountain Convention Center is much like walking through a museum, only the attendee is allowed to buy the items they are looking at.
Director of Sales for Smoky Mountain Resorts, Pete Smith, says this is one of his most favorite events they host every year and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Smith added that these kinds of shows help teach people about the history that surrounds us.
"We think there's all highways and movie theaters around here, but it didn't start that way. And neither did the rest of the country for that matter," Smith said.
This year's relic show featured more than 100 tables of artifacts that have been found across the country, but most is local to the Tennessee area. One of the biggest draws for this year's show is the signed paperwork of the Tennessee Volunteers from the Confederate Army of the United States.
"We didn't find one of the Alabama Crimson Tide, but we found one of the Tennessee Volunteers," Smith joked.
There were also reenactments and music selections from the era to keep people entertained while they looked around. Abraham Lincoln was even on hand to meet people as they walked through the door this year.
Smith added that this event has become more on an honoring for all veterans of wars, not only Civil War vets. Next year's show will be held the same weekend in August at the Smoky Mountain Convention Center.
