KNOX COUNTY (WVLT) – On Saturday morning, 43 teams took to the Cove at Concord Park for the annual Dragon Boat Races.
Each dragon boat team was made up of 20 rowers, a drummer and a steer person. Their goal was to paddle slender canoes down a marked course to raise money for Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries.
Most of the teams were entered by local businesses and comprised mostly of their own employees. The banks of the Cove were packed with nearly 5,000 spectators for the event, many cheering on their fellow co-workers.
“If you hear the people coming off the boats they're just screaming and elated,” said Wendy Witsoe, one of the race’s organizers. “They're having so much fun and really enjoying the water.
According to Witsoe, many businesses use the event as a team building activity and others use it as a company picnic.
At the end of the day, they raised more than $77,000 for KARM.
