KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Morristown man is charged with carjacking a 42-year woman minutes after officers dropped him off at a shelter. Eddie Sawyer was charged with aggravated robbery, carjacking, and possession of a controlled substance.
According to the Knoxville Police Dept. (KPD), the victim, Teresa Scarbrough, told officers the suspect stole her 1998 Toyota Corrolla in front of the Old Regas Restaurant, 318 N Gay Street, shortly before 6:00 p.m. Thursday night.
An undercover officer later spotted Scarbrough's car pulling into of a convenience store parking lot near Browadway and Powers Street.
The officer arrested Sawyer as he walked out of the store. A search of the suspect turned up 0.8 grams of crack cocaine.
The carjacking occurred just ninety minutes after officers dropped Sawyer off at Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM), a KPD spokesperson noted.
He was picked up after someone called police about a man either intoxicated or sick on the side of Middlebrook Pike. After determining Sawyer was neither sick nor drunk, officers drove him to KARM, where Sawyer said he was going to wait on a ride.
