UPDATE: UT statement about controversial preacher on campus

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Students don't know his name. But one campus preacher has become quite the controversial staple at UT.

Some of the things he says are off the walls," UT student DeAndre Kelly said.

It's not because of his religious views.

"He's just throwing slurs at people he doesn't know," UT student Bree Stacy said.

A student sent Local 8 News a video of the man calling UT student Brandon Hill "a masturbating potty-mouth."

"I just threw my hands up I didn't know what to do," Hill said.

Hill was on his way to class when he stopped to listen.

"He was just calling us all kinds of insulting names. Saying that God hates us," Hill said. "If we're going to have someone here that's going to try and spread the Gospel, I want them to do it in the way of love."

Students understand it's Freedom of Speech, but they hope he stays away from campus.

UT released a statement Thursday.

On August 2, 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued an opinion stating that itinerant preacher John McGlone was entitled to a preliminary injunction against the University of Tennessee. The injunction would prohibit the university from enforcing a requirement that McGlone, or any other speaker unassociated with the University, be sponsored by a member of the University community prior to speaking on campus. The university currently is in the process of drafting a new guest speaker policy.
