KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Assistant Chief Roger Wilson, 55, passed away Sunday night. "We are all deeply saddened at his sudden death," said Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones. "We will all miss his big smile, his sense of humor, and his soft heart for anybody in need."

Wilson was over the inmate program which provides help to non-profit projects as well as to city and county public works.

Sheriff Jones said Wilson coordinated thousands of hours of work that benefited the Young Williams Animal Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, countless schools, parks, churches, and cemeteries.

He started at the Sheriff's Office in 1992 as a control room clerk. He later became a correctional officer and worked his way through corrections as a corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, becoming an assistant chief in 2008.

Law enforcement is a family tradition in the Wilson household. Roger's father, Bill, retired as a captain in the Knox County Sheriff's Office after a long, illustrious career. Roger's stepson, Adam Mitchell, is an officer with the KCSO as well. Wilson's son Andy was also an officer with the KCSO until his death in a car crash in 2008.

Roger and his wife, Becky, established a scholarship in Andy's name at Carter High School where he graduated.

Wilson was as well known in the Carter Community, where he lived, as he was at the Sheriff's Office. "Everybody in Carter knew Roger," said the Sheriff. "It didn't matter who you were, if you were in any kind of need Roger was there to see to it that you were helped."

He was a member of Marbledale Baptist Church and many KCSO employees when they learned of his death said they will always remember his strong Christian faith.
