W. Tennessee deputy fired over fatal truck crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities have fired a sheriff's deputy accused of lying about a pickup-truck crash that killed a 23-year-old Memphis man.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Department issued a statement Tuesday saying former Deputy Alvin Dortch was fired for breaking departmental rules. The statement said one of those rules involved the discharge of a firearm.

Dortch told authorities he was following a pickup truck on suspicion of a traffic violation when it ran off an interstate highway and overturned on June 29 on the outskirts of Memphis. Ignacio Arcos, the driver of the truck, was killed in the crash.

Investigators said Dortch's incident report did not match with events recorded by his cruiser's video camera.
