Actor jailed in Memphis after altercation on airplane

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A veteran character actor who's the son of a notable civil rights leader was arrested for allegedly assaulting a flight attendant and a police officer at Memphis International Airport.

According to a airport police report, 80-year-old E.D. Nixon Jr. of Los Angeles was arrested Tuesday night on charges of disorderly conduct.

He is accused of striking a flight attendant on a Northwest plane and then hitting an officer. Nixon was connecting from Montgomery, Ala., through Memphis on his way home to Los Angeles.

Nixon was taken to the Regional Medical Center for treatment of high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar before being transported to jail in Memphis. He is being held on $1,000 bond.

Nixon, also known by his stage name of Nick LaTour, has appeared in close to 50 dramas and sitcoms. He is the son of E.D. Nixon, who was a leading organizer in the Montgomery bus boycotts.
