MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama is denouncing an ad approved by a black congressional candidate in Memphis that links the white incumbent with the Ku Klux Klan.
Nikki Tinker is challenging U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen in the 9th District Democratic primary on Thursday.
Tinker's ad juxtaposes pictures of a statue of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the KKK, and a hooded Klansman in front of a burning cross while asking, "Who is the real Steve Cohen?"
Obama's campaign issued a statement Thursday saying, "These incendiary and personal attacks have no place in our politics and will do nothing to help the good people of Tennessee."
Cohen is a former state senator with a long record as a civil rights supporter, including introducing the resolution passed by the House last week apologizing to black Americans for slavery and Jim Crow segregation. He was elected in the majority black district in 2006.
