UPDATE | Hand grenade found near Clinton Highway Walmart destroyed

By  |

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A mowing crew at the Clinton Highway Walmart found a hand grenade in the grass this morning.

The mowers discovered the device near the Walmart tire and lube center. They moved it to the curb along Pleasant Ridge Road and called 911.

The Knoxville Police Department sent the bomb squad, or Explosive Ordinance Detail, to the scene. They took the grenade from the scene to detonate it. The EOD investigation found the device was outdated and possibly dated back to the time of World War II. It had an unknown substance inside and investigators were not able to determine whether or not the substance was inert.

KPD says it's unclear how long the device had been on the property before being discovered this morning.
