One-third of TVA's nuclear reactors idle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Cooler weather across the seven-state Tennessee Valley Authority region couldn't have come at a better time.

One-third of TVA's nuclear power generation is idle.

Utility spokesman Gil Francis said reactors at the Watts Bar and Browns Ferry plants remain off line for repairs.

TVA has six nuclear units.

The two other units at Brown's Ferry were returned to full production on Monday. They had operated at 50 percent power for several days after a transformer that supplies electricity to a cooling tower failed last week.

Francis said cooler temperatures, bringing previous highs from the upper 90s into the mid-80s, occurred at a great time for TVA.
