Plane bound for Knoxville evacuated on LaGuardia runway

An American Eagle flight from Tennessee was evacuated on the runway at LaGuardia Airport Wednesday afternoon.

American Eagle flight 3340 was evacuated on the runway at LaGuardia Airport on July 30, 2014.

NEW YORK (CBS New York) --- An American Eagle flight from Tennessee was evacuated on the runway at LaGuardia Airport Wednesday afternoon.

Flight 3340 had just taken off and was bound for Knoxville, Tenn. when the plane’s pilots reported smoke in the cockpit, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane turned around and made an emergency landing at 3:20 p.m., briefly closing a runway.

The plane’s 44 passengers and 3 crew were evacuated on the runway. Emergency chutes were not deployed.

Evacuated passengers were taken to the terminal on buses.
The plane was towed away and the runway reopened.
