KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Eric McLean has acknowledged publicly he shot the teenage lover and student of his former wife Erin, a teacher.
But a Knox County jury will have to decide if premeditation, the heat of passion or an accident led him to pull the trigger that killed 18-year-old Sean Powell outside the McLeans' home in 2007.
Jury selection begins Wednesday in Knoxville in the highly publicized case.
The 33-year-old McLean is charged with first-degree murder.
Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence, while the defense is pushing for any of several lesser charges and penalties.
McLean has said the shooting was an accident, and that while he knew of his wife's affair with the teenager, he still loved her. They have since divorced.
