KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee has asked Roane County to stop the random drug testing of student athletes.
The group on Wednesday sent a letter to the county school district on behalf of a parent of a ninth-grader. David Higgins, who is also a volunteer softball and basketball coach, said his daughter has been drug tested without cause eight times and all have come back negative for signs of drugs.
According to a news release from the ACLU, Tennessee law bars schools from drug testing a student unless the principal has a good reason to suspect him or her of drug use.
The letter demands the district stop random drug testing or face a lawsuit. Roane County schools director Toni McGriff did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday.
