Election Day 2008 is underway!

An historic election is bringing a record number of voters to the polls, both in early voting and election day itself!

Within the first hour at Inskip Elementary, about 100 people had already cast their ballots.

Nancy Stinette, an election officer, has never seen voter turnout like today.

"It's wild! In the presidential, we usually have a lot more people come out and vote, but I can't remember, really, this early in the morning, having a line way out in the street and almost to the road."

When the polls opened, there were about 100 people waiting outside the front door.

Voter Anson Gaylon didn't seem to be bothered by the long line.

"I'm glad to see people coming to vote," he says.

Voter registration numbers are up 7.3% from the last presidential election, a sign of just how important Campaign '08 really is.

"I just believe this election is important. And the way the country is going, I think it needs a new direction, and that's why I came out today," Voter Michelle Hylton says.

This years election is historic for a number of reasons.

Perhaps the most notable, the nation will either vote into office the first Black President, or the first female Vice President.

Voter Ruby Jones is certain her vote, was the right one.

"I came out because it was my duty to the country. I will vote my conscience, and I think I'm going to vote the right man," she says.

Despite the long lines, election officer Nancy Stinette is happy to do her part in this years election.

"We're going to busy all day, which makes our time go faster. We'd rather be busy, we'd rather see people out voting," she says.

Polls here in East Tennessee close at 8 p.m.

Tennessee law states that if you aren't in line by closing, you will be unable to cast your vote.

As always, we want to know what you think!
