KNOXVILLE – For the fourth year in a row, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville will compete in RecycleMania, an annual, intercollegiate recycling and waste reduction competition that takes place over ten weeks during the spring semester.
From January 18th through March 28th, amounts of trash and recycling collected from every building on campus will be monitored and reported, and rankings will be posted each week comparing UT Knoxville with the 397 other colleges and universities competing nationwide.
The competition kicks off on Tuesday, January 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the university’s Pedestrian Mall, with recycling bin giveaways, raffle prizes, an informational display, a chance to sign up to reduce junk mail, and free Einstein Brothers coffee and bagels for anyone who brings a reusable mug. Sponsors of the event on campus include Make Orange Green, Aramark, and Alcoa, Inc.
In conjunction with the competition, 6,000 new deskside recycling bins are being placed in offices on campus. Additionally, 840 22-gallon home recycling bins, one for each residence, are being placed in the Sutherland Village Apartments, courtesy of Alcoa Inc.
Nationally, RecycleMania is sponsored and produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise Program, the National Recycling Coalition, the College and University Recycling Council, and Coca-Cola. More information and rankings can be found on the national RecycleMania Web site, and on the RecycleMania – University of Tennessee, Knoxville Chapter Facebook page.
