KINGSTON, ROANE COUNTY (WVLT) - Both new and old leaders in Roane County have two big problems to address, overcrowding at the county jail and courthouse security.
Volunteer TV's Stacy McCloud brings you a look at how the new Mayor, Sheriff, and Commissioners plan on producing results.
The county concerns are consistent.
Jack Stockton, Roane County Sheriff says, "the jail is in terrible condition."
Whether it's fix the old one, or starting from scratch, issue one, doing something about the overcrowded jail.
Cells of 5 are holding 10, and inmates are sleeping on the floor. All because right now there are 108 of them crammed in to what was built to hold just 52.
An issue newly sworn in Sheriff Jack Stockton is dedicated to resolve.
"That is my job to make sure that they are housed, secure and their minimum needs are met and I'm going to see that is taken care of."
The question, how? Especially when you think dollar signs.
New leaders say they have faith that smart spending will equal smart solutions.
Roane County Commissioner Chris Johnson says, "if we work together we're going to make Roane county a better place in the future."
Roane County Commissioner Ray Cantrell says, "we have to cut where we have to and not increase taxes."
Issue two, the courthouse, where many hope to see security improvements.
Many have already been made since last years deadly shooting, but Sheriff Stockton says expect more.
Exactly what isn't being said, but the new Mayor Mike Farmer says long lines at security is one issue they are trying to resolve.
"The judges are taking a look at their schedules, trying to maybe spread out some court cases and other things we'll be looking at."
Steps officials hope will pave the path for making visions a reality in the near future.
Stockton says, "within the next 6 months the people are going to start to see changes"
Stockton says that a second security walk-through and an independent study are some things that will kick start solutions at the courthouse.
When it comes to the jail, officials agree, seeing eye to eye on key issues will be one of the best ways to get things done.
