LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Three crew members of a sailboat have been found dead and a fourth person is missing after their boat apparently collided with a much larger vessel during a race off the coasts of California and Mexico.
The Newport Ocean Sailing Association was hosting the 125-mile Newport, Calif. to Ensenada, Mexico yacht race when the collision occurred several miles off the coast near the border.
Association spokesman Rich Roberts says in a news release early Sunday that an investigation is ongoing but it appears that the 37-foot Aegean collided with a much larger ship.
There were no more details on the other vessel.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Henry Dunphy says rescuers are searching late Saturday for the crew member after finding the bodies and debris from the boat near the Coronado Islands in Mexico.
The names of the dead were not released pending notification of next of kin.
