Channon Christian's parents speak out about internet claims

Gary and Deena Christian defend their daughter Channon

Gary and Deena Christian tell Volunteer TV News that they've been angered and hurt by rumors surrounding their daughter Channon and her boyfriend Christopher Newsom's carjacking, rape, torture and murder. (March 5th, 2009)

KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Gary and Deena Christian want to set the record straight about their daughter. Channon Christian had been dating Christopher Newsom for two months when they were carjacked and brutally murdered during the first week of January 2007.

You can tell by the way Gary Christian tightly clasps his hands that he holds a lot of anger inside over his daughter’s murder.

“I will never see a morning that I don't hurt," he said.

These days the Christian’s feel as is they are fighting a two-fronted war. The first front is located in the courtroom, where four suspects still awaiting trial for allegedly raping, torturing and killing Channon and Chris.

"They deserve to die,” Gary said.

The second front takes place in the anonymous community of cyberspace.

Gary and Deena told Volunteer TV News that they’ve been angered and hurt by a number of Internet rumors appearing in the comment sections of various websites.

"We've got enough to deal with," he said about the various rumors and theories floating around the internet that deal with what happened the night the young couple disappeared, "we really don't need to deal with that."

Channon’s mother recalled one of the specific statements which claimed the young couple was in the wrong part of town the night they were carjacked.

“Well if they were down there riding around, then they got what was coming to them,” she said, paraphrasing what she recalled from the comment.

Similar comments and rumors are why the Christian family feel it’s necessary to defend their daughter’s honor. On Thursday night they began clearing up some of the thing’s they’ve read on the internet about what happened.

"My daughter and Chris were not riding around in a bad place and got carjacked,” Gary said. “They were taken to Chipman Street by force."

Police quickly determined during their investigation that the couple was carjacked near Knoxville Center Mall and Washington Ridge Apartment complex. The apartment complex is located a little more than three miles and about 10 minutes by car from Chipman Street.

Channon’s parents have also been bothered by rumors that she was in the Chipman Street area looking for drugs. Gary decided to quash it by obtaining Channon’s drug test results from her former healthcare employer as well as her autopsy results.

Gary obtained Channon's drug test results from her former employer, a healthcare company as well as the medical examiner’s toxicology report which was conducted during her autopsy.

"She had taken no prescription or non-prescription drugs,” he said. “No marijuana, no cocaine, no ecstasy, no nothing."

With those facts now out, the family hopes some of the Internet speculation will calm down as they turn their attention upcoming trials.

Letalvius Cobbins will be the first suspect tried for the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. It’s scheduled to begin on July 6th. Vanessa Coleman’s trial starts on August 10th, Lemaricus Davison’s trial starts on September 21st and George Thomas’s starts on November 20th.

The story of Channon and Chris brings me to tears each time I think about those two beautiful kids and how their lives were taken so callously. Mr. & Mrs. Christian and Mr. & Mrs. Newsom, you have endured more than any parent ever should. I am keeping all of you in my prayers and am hoping that one day you will all find peace again. I am feel sure that during those terrible hours when Channon and Chris were suffering, that Jesus was with them, comforting them and giving them strength to endure that terrible ordeal. I hope that you can find peace and solace by knowing that they were not alone. From the very bottom of my heart, please accept my most sincere sympathy and prayers that are being said on your behalf. God Bless each of you.

I just want to say to Mr. and Mrs. Christian and Mr. And Mrs. Newsom that as a mother, my heart goes out to all of you. I watched this special on tv the other night and was in tears. I think it is 1of the most despicable crimes ever and I pray to God that all of these pieces of escrement get whats coming. what goes around comes around, they will get theirs. Your children were beautiful and who cares about what people say? they were not on drugs, you could tell just by looking at them. Mr. Christian, you remind me of myself, i see your anger and you are entitled to it, more than any1 in this world. YOur children have not died in vain and will be remembered for their beauty. They are truly the few that make humanity beautiful. that fat pig coleman should be ashamed of herself as a woman, well a busted looking woman. Davidson, I think his and all of their punishments should be that these beautiful kids' parents get to do what they want to all of them. vanessa coleman and all your cohorts, come to boston and try to jack me, i got something for you. as a woman you make me sick. davidson, you are disgusting and should be 'executed' like yesterday at Channon's fathers hands. Letalvius cobbins you are just ugly although u look like a model next to that fat pig coleman. all of you disgust me and I hope you burn in hell.

I as well watched it on the ID channel on 10/22/11. I've been sad since. I shouldn't have watched it because for some reason I am having disturbing thoughts about it. I struggle with depression, but never once has a case got to me like this one has. Those animals should go through some pain of their own. My prayers go out to the parents, friends, and all family members! I have thought about what I would have done in their shoes, and it's horrifying...I'm 22 and I would have to say I wouldn't go down without a fight. My heart hurts for these people. I pray God took them before they went through so much pain. I would've tried to save them if I could've. God bless them and their families...

I am so sorry, no parent should have to go through this. I watched this on the 22nd of Oct and it made me sick to my stomach. My heart hurt for these parents, as I am a mother of a son and daughter. These are animals that could treat another human or animal like this. I will pray for the parents. This honestly broke my heart.

So sorry for your loss, they should've given these animals the death penalty. My prayers are with the families of the two victims,

I also just viewed this story on ID Channel. I am surprised by this horrific crime, that I had never heard of this, as I am a avid new watcher. All the monsters who violated these beautiful young adults, should've been given the death penalty. I don't want to say this is for sure a "Hate crime," but rather know for sure that they individuals certainly are deranged and pure evil. They don't deserve to live, nor be kept alive at the expense of tax payers. My thoughts and prayers go to the families of Ms. Christian, and Mr. Newsom. I am a Christian woman, who is not usually in favor of the dealth penalty, but in this case, it would justify the cause.

i just saw this stor(for the first time) on ID. The coverage(or lack thereof has been pathetic). I am Black, but I know if the victims were a minority and the perps white, it would have been on the National news all the time. What a bunch of SAVAGES.
