E. Kentucky Miner Killed In Underground Rock Fall

Barbourville, KY (AP) -- An Eastern Kentucky miner is dead after an underground rock fall Friday afternoon.

State officials say the death brings the number of mine fatalities in the state this year to 14.

The name of the 56-year-old miner hasn't been released.

State Mine Safety Spokesman Chuck Wolfe says the accident happened about 12:30 p.m. Friday at a mine in Barbourville. Wolfe says the miner was operating a roof bolter and a five-foot long slab of rock fell on him.

Wolfe says it was the first fatality reported at the mine, but the operation has been cited several times for various safety violations, ranging from machinery maintenance to roof cracks.
