Memphis (AP) - Former State Senator Roscoe Dixon was sentenced Friday in Memphis to more than five years in prison for accepting bribes.
The 57-year-old Dixon received a sentence of five years and three months for bribery and extortion in the FBI investigation code named Tennessee Waltz. He is the first of five current or former state lawmakers to go to trial on Tennessee Waltz charges.
Dixon could have been sentenced to 90 years in prison. But federal guidelines call for a much lighter sentence for a first offender.
Prosecutors said Dixon and a co-defendant took multiple bribes totaling $15,500.
The Tennessee Waltz scandal rocked the state legislature last year and led to a special session on ethics reforms.
Dixon's trial jury saw video clips of him taking cash.
