TVA: Reactor Leak Was False Alarm, Meigs Co. Schools Remain Closed

Spring City, Tenn. (AP) -- TVA said this morning a false alarm at the watts bar nuclear plant indicated a coolant leak. But the plant is shut down for installation of new steam generators.

Utility Spokeswoman Barbara Martocci says there's no cause for concern for workers or the public.

However, the Meigs County Schools closed when the alarm was sounded. Officials say the event came on top of already- low attendance because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The single-reactor station is located about 50 miles south of Knoxville and 50 miles north of Chattanooga on the Tennessee River.

At 6:15 a.m., the plant alerted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of an "unusual event."

Martocci says notification was required even though the plant has been closed since September for installation of new steam generators and routine refueling.

After finding no leak, the "unusual event" was canceled at 7:35 a.m.
