City, County Release Homeless Study

Knoxville (WVLT) - We're getting a clearer picture of homelessness in the Knoxville Area.

A report released Tuesday covers the past two decades.

It shows the numbers of people living in shelters and on the street has declined since 2004, but is still twice as high as it was in 1986.

Father Ragan Schriver, with Catholic Charities of East Tennessee says we need change in order to get people off the street and into proper housing.

"To try to put people into housing, to try a whole new radically different way of trying to care for people who are struggling with the issue of homelessness. I think the willingness of so many people to buy into something new and something different is just terrific," says Father Schriver.

The East Tennessee Coalition to End Homelessness was formed in 1985, with some hopeful developments in the past two years with the new Knoxville-Knox County ten year plan to end chronic homelessness.
