Gatlinburg, Sevier County (WVLT) – A family reunion turns tragic as 11 are taken to area hospitals after a stairway collapse.
Family members from Florida and South Carolina gathered at a Gatlinburg cabin in Chalet Village for a family reunion.
"They were taking a family portrait and they were all lined up on the steps, and that's when they collapsed," said a neighbor, Nettie Green.
The Sevier County Sheriff's Department says 34 people almost 10 feet to the ground when the stairs gave way leaving only the railing.
"There were several other patients which were laying on the grouns, and around the ground area the stairwell had collapsed from the backside of the cabin," said Selena Ball from the Seiver County Sheriff's Department.
Neighbors returning to their cabin could not get up their driveway because of the ambulance.
"When we started up our driveway we saw an ambulance in the driveway, they were putting 2 at a time in the ambulance."
7 people were taken by lifestar to UT Medical Center, 4 were taken by ambulance to Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center.
All but two have been released. 3 People have broken ankles the other eight have minor cuts and bruises.
"It looked like it ranged anywhere from minor injuries to probably like a broken laseration or a broken bone," said Officer Ball.
All other injuries were treated at the scene.
"There were a lot of family members that weren't as injured that were able to assist with the ones that were," said Ball.
