Nashville, Tenn (AP) - U.S. Marshals say a convict who escaped from state custody 33 years ago has been caputured in Alabama.
57 year old Billy Wayne Hayes was arrested Friday night at a Dothan, Alabama, gas station, nearly 350 miles from Nashville, where he was imprisoned.
Hayes was serving a 10 year sentence on 2nd degree charges in the shooting death of Nashville paint contractor William Howard Ferguson.
Hayes was assigned to a work release program and never returned after signing out for work on December 21st, 1972.
Marshals received a tip earlier in the week that Hayes was working in either Dothan or Mobile, Alabama, as a construction worker using his true name.
He was caught with crack cocaine in his clothing and charged with possession of cocaine.
