Bible Shredding Suspect Waives Hearing, Case Goes To Grand Jury

Maryville, Blount County (AP) - A judge in Maryville has sent a grand jury the theft case against a man accused of stealing Bibles and tearing the pages out of them.

Timothy Carl Clark waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday.

Clark is accused of stealing Bibles from Broadway Baptist Church and new Providence Presbyterian Church.

Investigators say the covers were ripped off the bibles, the pages torn out and cut into four equal pieces.

The pieces were dumped at churches and other spots. Some were stuffed into mailboxes.

A judge ordered Clark evaluated and mental health professionals say he is capable of assisting in his defense. The court ruled him competent for trial.

Clark is free on $60,000 bond and under orders to stay away from houses of worship.
