Knoxville (WVLT) - Getting around parts of Downtown Knoxville may get trickier as TDOT opens a new part of its SmartFix40 project.
The completion of the Hall of Fame Drive extension will streamline traffic, it opens tomorrow.
This road improvement makes it easier for motorists to get into Downtown Knoxville from the east. It also now gives drivers a direct shot from Summit Hill Drive to Broadway in North Knoxville with a new intersection to Magnolia Avenue.
Wednesday afternoon, road crews were putting the finishing touches on this nearly 2 mile extension of Hall of Fame Drive.
It partially falls on the path of the old North Fifth Avenue and crosses I-40 with a new bridge.
This connector will provide access for drivers who usually travel James White Parkway. The parkway shuts down on Sunday as part of TDOT's next phase of SmartFix40.
"Anytime we have a traffic shift it takes motorists a few days to get used to things. Hopefully, we have notified everyone in a sufficient amount of time. But they have already been thinking about the new routes and planned ahead to know how to get into downtown," says John Hunter, TDOT Project Manger.
TDOT will open this extension with a ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow morning at 10 at the Hall Of Fame and Summit Hill Intersection.
