Bush Says Insurgents in Iraq Thwarted US Efforts In 2006

White House (AP) -- President Bush says insurgents in Iraq have thwarted US efforts at "establishing security and stability throughout the country" this year.

The President also says he has asked new Defense Secretary Robert Gates to report to him as quickly as possible on plans to enlarge the size of the Army and Marine Corps.

In the year-end White House news conference, the President said the US will "ask more of our Iraqi partners" next year.

However, the President sidestepped a question as to whether he would order a so-called surge of troops in Iraq as a first step toward gaining control there.
