KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(WVLT) -- The 5 year-old boy who was on life support at Children's Hospital has died, hospital officials confirmed Wednesday morning. The Knoxville Police Dept. said the boy, Robert Reyes, was severely beaten by his mother's live-in boyfriend, 23 year-old Tyrail Cooke.
According to the police report, Cooke confessed to shoving Reyes into a TV stand where the boy hit his head twice before hitting the ground. Cooke then threw the five-year old to the ground from shoulder height and said he hit Reyes' head against the bathtub several more times.
By that point, Cooke told police Reyes appeared "lifeless" and was "gasping for air."
Police said the boy suffered severe head trauma and bruising on various parts of his body.
Based on the interview and evidence gathered at the scene, Cooke has charged with Aggravated Child Abuse, Simple Possession, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
According to arrest warrants, "The defendant confessed to pushing the five year old victim, Robert Jose Reyes, into a television stand where the victim struck his head twice."
Police say they expect to upgrade the charges once the boy dies.
"We would expect that to occur a few weeks after the child dies if the child does indeed die," said Darrell DeBusk, Knoxville Police.
The mom told WVLT reporter Kyle Grainger on Wednesday that life support will be pulled tonight at midnight.
