Gatlinburg, Sevier County (AP) -- The National Park Service has closed Newfound Gap Road because of snow on the mountaintop.
The road is also US 441 between Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and cherokee, north carolina.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokesman Bob Miller says sand trucks were able to keep up with the wintry conditions for a few hours, but as the precipitation changed over to all snow and became heavy, the decision to close the road was made about 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time.)
Newfound Gap Road will be closed for the rest of Tuesday, at least.
