Clerk Stabs Robber

Knoxville (WVLT) - Remi Lynch has been robbed before. Tuesday morning was actually the fourth or fifth time she's been held up.

She was working at the Breadbox on Hardin Valley Road when a man approached her with a knife.

But when he dropped his weapon, she made her move.

Breadbox officials say they always encourage their clerks to be submissive during a robbery to protect themselves.

But the clerk in this case said when he went at her with his knife it was either him or her, and she chose him.

When two people walked into the Breadbox store on Hardin Valley Road before daylight Tuesday morning, Remi Lynch says she knew something wasn't right.

"I was kind of suspicious of them. I know they were up to something," says Lynch.

Lynch says one man then jumped the counter demanding money from the register, but then he took action. "He started lifting up his knife and walking toward me and that's when I started hitting, throwing fists at him to back him off."

Then, she says, the knife fell to the floor.

"Knelt down and picked it up and when I came up I was, you know, going like this at his side," she says.

Lynch says the two suspects then fled but she saw the suspect come back and ask police for an ambulance.

Justin Daugherty was taken to UT hospital.

Lynch says she did what she had to in order to survive.

Family members are thankful she wasn't hurt.

"I worry about her working that night shift like that but I don't think she really cares," Remi's aunt Bernice Peardon.

Lynch isn't missing any sleep or work over the incident. She says it's part of the risk you take in the business. "It's just the way it is. I mean, if I have a problem with that then I'm in the wrong business. I need to go somewhere else."

She did try to keep it from her family by not telling them, but her aunt says she's thinking twice about trying to whip her.

"Now that she knows where that big knife is, I think I'd be in trouble too," Bernice jokes.

Police are continuing their search for the second suspect.

Justin Daugherty is expected to be charged with attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated assault when he is released from the hospital.

Lynch says she really didn't want to stab anybody, but if it comes down to them or her, she's made her mind up and would do it again.
