Certified Safe Sitter Classes

Knoxville (WVLT) - A group of tweenagers is ready to take on the world of babysitting.

Several girls between the ages of 11 and 14 became certified safe sitters at Children's Hospital saturday.

They spent the entire day learning what types of responsibilities they'd have to take on, how to interview potential people to babysit for, and what dangers they can come across, such as helping a child who's choking.

Children's RN Staff Educator Susan Johnson says, "The whole reason the safety sitter class was started is there was a nurse that left her child with a babysitter and her child choked, it was a toddler and she choked, and she died because thr babysitter didn't know what to do."

Safe sitter classes are taught twice a month, the $18 fee includes a certified safe sitter card and a babysitting packet.
