Knoxville (WVLT) - One family is mourning the loss of a life cut short, while another holds out hope their family member is still alive.
The body of 23-year-old Christopher Newsom was found Sunday afternoon in East Knoxville, while police continue their search for his girlfriend, 21-year-old Channon Christian.
Volunteer TVs Jessa Goddard has the latest on the investigation.
"She did call her mother and tell her that they were on their way to a friend's house and that she would be home later on, and of course, they never arrived at the friend's house," Christopher Newsom's father Hugh Newsom said.
And Hugh Newsom says that's the last time anyone heard from Chris or Channon. Chris's body was found hours later, lying beside the railroad tracks between Cherry and Ninth Street Sunday afternoon. Police found Channon's car, but still, no sign of Channon. They're searching by foot and by air and plan to canvass the general area again on Tuesday.
"We're just getting a grid search because that's basically where we found his body, and we also found her vehicle in this general area also," Knoxville Police Sergeant Tim Snoderly said.
Hugh Newsom says he's speaking out in the midst of tragedy in the hopes of first finding Channon alive and then finding the person or persons responsible for the crime.
"We always thought of it as it happens to someone else, but not this time. It happened to us," Newsom said.
And Newsom says he doesn't want it to happen to another family. That's why he's asking anyone with information to come forward. He says anyone who may have seen the couple dining out may have been among the last to see his son alive.
"He loved life, and it's just devastating that someone has taken his life away at this early age of 23," Newsom said.
Police will not reveal the cause of death, but they will say they suspect foul play. They're asking anyone with information to call the Knoxville Police Crime Hotline at 215-7212.
