Knoxville (WVLT) - Meanwhile, friends, family and well-wishers are providing moral support for the Newsom and the Christian families.
Throughout Tuesday, they've phoned, met with, and written on Internet sites of their love and support of the families.
Volunteer TV's Gary Loe has the latest.
People close to Channon Christian's family had held out hope for her safe return. Now, they're empathizing with them and remembering their loved one.
Friends of 21-year-old Channon Christian are remembering the enjoyable times with this UT student and Farragut High School graduate.
"As someone who was full of life," friend Wyatt Clemmer said. "She was really sweet, she was honest, so she was a great girl."
Wyatt Clemmer grew up with Channon and played baseball with her brother. While recalling the past, his thoughts turn to Channon's family.
"It's got to be a nightmare for them, really. I can't imagine something like that happening to anybody's family. That's got to be one of the toughest things to go through," Clemmer said.
Channon's friends writing on an Internet website got early word that the female body police found on Chipman Street in East Knoxville was Channon's. A number of postings ask for prayers at this difficult time.
UT's student government president also is having trouble coping.
"That's just terrifying for students, especially since we're so young, we just don't think things like that can happen to us," UT student government president Kristi Bogle said.
Neighbors of the Christian family are also saddened.
"This is really going to upset my wife a lot when she hears about it," neighbor Sid McNair said.
Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison shared few details in a news conference.
"At this point, we don't know that many details about why this crime occurred to these two young people, and that's something that will be determined somewhere down the road," Hutchison said.
Meantime, the prayers continue for the christian and Newsom families.
"Everyone's thoughts are with them right now," Clemmer said.
Authorities have shut down the command center on Cherry Street and now begin the next phase of their investigation.
