Kingston, Roane County (WVLT/AP) -- A judge has ruled today that the brothers accused of ambushing and killing a Roane County deputy are mentally competent to stand trial.
A judge ordered psychological evaluations of 45-year-old Rocky Joe Houston and 47-year-old Clifford Leon Houston last October.
Prosecutors say the brothers ambushed Deputy Bill Jones and his passenger, Mike Brown, in their patrol car outside the Houston's home, killing both men. They are seeking the death penalty.
The Houstons have long complained of harassment by Roane County law enforcement and claim the shootings were in self-defense.
