Final Preparations Made for Governor's Inauguration

Nashville (WVLT) - Saturday will be a big day for Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. Two months after carrying all 95 Tennessee counties and being re-elected governor for a second term, his inauguration will be held Saturday.

Volunteer TV's Gordon Boyd will cover the inauguration and the celebrations Saturday. He's taking a look at what is in store for the big day.

Come eleven o'clock Saturday morning, some 5,000 of our fellow Tennesseans will pack War Memorial Plaza, just south of the Capitol.

Just like four years ago, they will be dressed to chill.

Unlike the wind chill of four years ago, the temperatures will be merely uncomfortable.

Set up began Thursday, but by noon Friday, almost everything was in place, save the 18 by 36 foot old glory adorning the plaza columns.

The governor's folks say the inauguration will be more low-key than the first, but still, a million dollar affair, private donations paying for all of it.

Seats Saturday will be by ticket only, partly for crowd control, partly for security.

But that's raising some concerns at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, site of Saturday morning's interfaith prayer service.

The church traditionally is open sanctuary, as in open to everybody, but this too will be no ticket, no entrance.

"We would love to include as many people as possible, but the reality is this is a relatively small building and by the time you include the governor, family, friends, members of the clergy, they really take up most of the space," says Amber McDowell, from the Governor's Inaugural Committee.

Saturday night's parties are also by ticket only. The Pioneer Ball at the Wild Horse Saloon will have about 1,500 people. But Volunteer TV will be your front row seat for all of it, from the speech to the parties at BB King's.
