Maryville, Blount County (AP) -- Motorists and neighborhood people jumped into a pond and tried unsuccessfully to save the life of a man whose car had rolled into it.
The Highway Patrol says the incident occurred Saturday evening in Monroe County and claimed the life of 41-year-old Steven Turpin of Madisonville.
The trooper's report says Turpin was traveling on Ball Play Road when the car swerved across the road and ran off the left shoulder, ran across a driveway and went into the water, rolled over and submerged.
Trooper Lowell Russell reported the volunteer rescuers got a chain onto the car and hooked it to a pickup truck to roll it upright.
Russell says Turpin didn't survive because his neck was broken in the crash.
The trooper says there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol.
