Knoxville (WVLT) If you think love is just roses and romance, you're wrong.
In fact, researchers say our ability to feel love and intimacy is what keeps us healthy.
Medical Reporter Jessa Goddard asks what's love got to do with it?
Researchers say it has everything to do with your wellness.
In fact, they say, our very survival depends on the healing power of love, intimacy and relationships.
Study after study has shown loneliness is a risk factor for disease.
And, it really is possible to die from a broken heart.
Love is in the air at the Flower Market, the busiest day of the year for workers here.
The same is true at the Chocolate Factory, where workers can't dip strawberries in chocolate fast enough.
We're all buying into the idea that this is the most romantic day of the year.
And loving every minute of it.
Dr. Parinda Khatri, a psychologist says, "in fact, researchers have likened the experience of love to a drug. And if you look at neuralgic data, people release some of the same feel good chemicals and hormones when they're in love that give them the sense of being almost high."
Interventional cardiologist Malcolm Foster says being in love can have that effect on your head, and also, your heart.
"Your heart goes pitter, patter and you do have increased heart rate and a little bit of increased blood pressure. That's probably one of the only times that it's ok to have that!"
But if your heart isn't going pitter patter, it has an entirely different effect.
Dr. Khatri continues,"having a sense of loss is very stressful for people and that can result in, not only emotional sadness, but also people tend to take less care of themselves."
Dr. Foster says, "so, we look at high blood pressure, and cholesterol and other risk factors that we focus on and sometimes we forget about emotional health."
Proving love works in mysterious ways.
If you've ever experienced a difficult break-up, someone probably told you 'twas better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.
That isn't necessarily true, some people don't have the ability to cope, resulting in depression.
Psychologists remind you, love comes in many forms.
