Jefferson City, Jefferson County (WVLT) - The president of Carson Newman College is stepping down after deciding to continue his career at another Baptist affiliated institution, Mercer University in Georgia.
Dr. Netherton has been with Carson Newman for seven years. In that time he has established a long list of accomplishments.
One of the biggest is a part in the $55 million capitol campaign. It's the schools most successful fundraiser in the 155 year history. Like any job Netherton has faced adversities.
Back in October, he received a no confidence vote from the school's council, but since then the board and president have worked together to restructure admissions that's resulted in an 80 percent increase in applications this year. Dr. Netherton says while he will remember his accomplishments but there's one thing he will remember more.
"All the wonderful people I've had the privilidge of working with and getting to know. Carson Newman has a great history, a great heritage. There's just a lot of great people affiliated with it," says Dr. Netherton.
President Netherton will continue his service to Carson Newman until the end of May. He begins as Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance at Mercer in October.
